“Still A Bad Taste In The Mouth” – Journalist Suggests Man U Have Moved On But Spurs Issues Remain

|

With it well known amongst the Tottenham Hotspur fanbase that centre-half Toby Alderweireld has a time limited £25million release fee on his head this summer given we optioned the extra 12 month clause we had on his contract, we’ve seen plenty of heavy speculation linking Manchester United and others with cheeky moves for his services this summer.

“Hope The Club Is Working On Reinforcements” – Spurs Fans Will Read Different Things Into Toby’s Latest Few Words

The 30-year-old himself has kept his counsel throughout all of this and his interviews have given little away other than he’s happy at the club, he expects to be with us next season and when it comes to a new contract we simply have to see if one is agreed.

Understandably fans are concerned though but Belgian football journalist Kristoff Terreur has claimed that the club feel burned in some respects after he refused our last offer of a fresh extension – it might be me, but off the top of my head I don’t remember confirmation of a new deal being on the table, it was just always assumed that with the release clause there would’ve been a fresh offer to remove that.

“Clubs who want Alderweireld can pay just £25m and they will have him. He’s 30 years old and clubs try to get younger defenders now. You see that with United wanting Maguire, 26 years old, but he’s still a quality defender and maybe at the end of the window somebody will come in for him. There haven’t been talks about a new contract since he rejected the last contract and still there is a bad taste in the mouth when he rejected it.”

According to everything we know, the release clause runs out long before the end of the window arrives, so I’m naturally sceptical here about the claims full stop.
